Khalid’s first big challenge – Singapore vs India Preview

Indian NT head coach Khalid Jamil in training.

Khalid Jamil faces his first major test as head coach of the Indian national team, as they prepare to play Singapore in a must-win match in the 2026 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. The match will take place at the Singapore National Stadium in Kallang and will begin at 17:30 IST.

The Blue Tigers are coming off a successful performance in the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup, where they won bronze medals after beating Oman on penalties. Conversely, the Singapore NT is coming off of an impressive run of form, having only suffered one defeat in their previous five games. With only four matches remaining in the qualifying campaign, a win in this match is critical for both sides.

What’s at stake:

No one can disagree with the fact that winning bronze in the CAFA Nations Cup was a fantastic achievement, but Khalid Jamil’s major objective when he was hired as the head coach of Indian NT was to guide this side to the 2026 AFC Asian Cup. With only one point from the first two games, it’s safe to say Manolo Marquez hasn’t done Khalid any favors, as the team presently lies at the bottom of the standings.

If India is serious about making it to the tournament in 2026, nothing short of a victory should be anticipated. A win versus Singapore might bring India level on points with Singapore, who currently leads the standings. Losing this would be catastrophic for India, since their prospects of qualification would become minimal.

Indian National Team in training in Singapore

Speaking ahead of the game, Khalid Jamil added, “There are still four matches to go, and the next one against Singapore is the most important for us right now. We cannot look too far ahead; we must take one step at a time. We believe we have a team capable enough to get the results we want”

Team News:

Khalid Jamil has received a boost ahead of the qualifications with the return of Mohun Bagan players to the national team. Sunil Chhetri and Sandesh Jhingan, who had to leave the CAFA Nations Cup in the middle owing to a jaw injury, are amongst the notable returns. Additionally, Farukh Chaudhary and Brandon Fernandes have returned to the National team roster.

The battle between the club and the nation regarding player release has prevented a few players from making the final list of players. Due to an injury sustained in the last few days of training, Naorem Roshan Singh is one of the standout absences. Pramveer Singh and Louis Macarton Nickson were promoted from India’s U-23 team, but Suhail was not called up.

Predicted Lineup:

Khalid Jamil will hope that the return of Sunil Chhetri will solve goal-scoring woes.

Khalid Jamil, as everyone knows, is not a fan of making drastic changes. It is anticipated that he will deploy the same back five (including GK) as in the CAFA Nations Cup. Nikhil Prabhu and Danish Farooq have established themselves in the midfield, with the two playing important roles in recent matches. Khalid is expected to rely on experience in the attack with Liston, Brandon, Chhangte, and Chhetri, since his team has frequently struggled to produce clear goal scoring opportunities.

Predicted 11: Gurpreet Singh, Muhammed Uvais, Sandesh Jhingan, Anwar Ali, Rahul Bheke, Nikhil Prabhu, Danish Farooq, Liston Colaco, Brandon Fernandes, Lallianzuala Chhangte, Sunil Chhetri.

What can be expected:

One aspect of Khalid Jamil’s Indian team that is obvious is their defensive steadiness. Building a solid defensive unit while maximizing the offensive set-pieces has been a priority for the former Jamshedpur boss. India’s inability to score against a low block team was evident in their match against Afghanistan. However, with the return of Brandon Fernandes and Sahal Abdul Samad, better chances are likely to be created for the strikers. With Sunil Chhetri returning, we predict India to win 2-1 over the hosts.
