The Indian national football is set to take on the Jamaican national team in the first game of the 2026 Unity Cup. This will mark the side’s debut in the Unity Cup. India will come in as underdogs in the match, and with almost no chances of progressing to the final.
India come into the game after a disappointing AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualification campaign, with India finishing bottom of a group with Singapore, Hong Kong, and Bangladesh. However, the final game against second-placed Hong Kong was a sliver of optimism, with a 2-1 win in Kochi. Goals from debutant Ryan Williams and full-back Akash Mishra were the difference.

Jamaica, on the other hand, come into the tournament following extra-time heartbreak in their World Cup qualifying final against DR Congo, losing to a 99th minute goal by former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe. This loss continues the Reggae Boyz’s 28-year absence from the World Cup.
About the Unity Cup:
The Unity Cup is a tournament between countries with large diaspora in London. This is the fourth iteration, and is set to feature Nigeria, Jamaica, Zimbabwe, and India. The previous three iterations have been held in 2002, 2004, and 2025. Nigeria and Jamaica have played in all four iterations, while 2026 marks a debut tournament for Zimbabwe and India. Nigeria have won all three previous tournaments, while Jamaica have been runners-up in the 2002 and 2025 tournaments.

This time, the tournament is set to be held in Charlton Athletic’s stadium, The Valley. The ground holds over 27,000 fans, and is likely particularly special for Jamaican forward Kaheim Dixon, who currently plays for Charlton.
What’s at stake:
The Unity Cup has recently got FIFA Tier 1 international competition status. This means matches now count for FIFA ranking points, and players who make an appearance will earn official international caps. However, there is still nothing competitive at stake, it is still a friendly tournament. It could also act as much-needed positivity for the four teams, who are all not playing the World Cup this summer.
India squad selection:
With the conclusion of the Indian Super League season, head coach Khalid Jamil had named a squad mixed with experienced names and youngsters. However, the initial squad itself had excluded players such as Joseph Sunny, Valpuia, and Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia, who all had notable league campaigns. The inclusion of experienced players rather than younger and newer faces was also a noted criticism of the squad by a number of fans.

However, preparations for the tournament were disrupted when Mohun Bagan made the decision to withdraw their players from the camp on the morning of the squad’s flight to London, despite Mohun Bagan CEO Vinay Chopra reportedly confirming their release for the tournament three days earlier. This meant seven fewer players on the plane, and a race against time for any potential replacements to get visa clearance to travel.
Thankfully for the team, midfielder Macarton Nixon and right-back Nikhil Barla have received clearance and were able to travel to London. These have slightly masked over the concerns over midfield and right-back depth, but still remains a critical issue. Only Jeakson Singh, Ricky Shabong, and Macarton Nixon can play in the deeper midfield roles, and questions were raised about Nikhil Poojary’s fitness after he missed Bengaluru’s last three league games. While Macarton and Barla provide depth, they are likely not enough depth in a high-intensity tournament.

Further, forwards Mohammed Sanan and Vikram Partap Singh have also received clearance, but are only likely to join the squad on matchday. This could make their presence for the Jamaica match a question of time and their fitness.
Jamaica squad selection:
Jamaica have opted for a team mixed with domestic Jamaican league players, and players already based in England. The Reggae Boyz have opted to rest some notable players like Leon Bailey, Demarai Gray, and Ethan Pinnock, but European-experienced names like Isaac Hayden, and Joel Latibeaudiere are still present in the side.

The North American nation is also using the tournament to try out young players in the senior team, with head coach Rudolph Speid naming a squad with an average age of 22.8 years. With India being the rank outsiders of the tournament, the fixture will likely represent an opportunity for Speid to give newer faces an international debut.
India’s predicted lineup:
At the moment, it seems further replacements to get to a 26-man squad are unlikely. Additionally, While fans would likely want to see younger players in action, it is likely Khalid will opt for more experienced players. Taking all factors into account, the squad could look like:
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (GK), Nikhil Barla, Rahul Bheke, Sandesh Jhingan, Akash Mishra, Jeakson Singh, Ricky Shabong, Ryan Williams, Edmund Lalrindika, Lallianzuala Chhangte.

Jamaican players to look out for:
Bailey-Tye Cadamarteri
Bailey-Tye Cadamartei is a forward who has broken into the Jamaica senior team at 21 years old, making six appearances and scoring twice as well. After three seasons of regular EFL Championship and League One football, the elder Cadamartei brother signed for Wrexham in February, and has played thrice for the Championship club’s senior team. This tournament would likely give him a chance to solidify his place in the Jamaican team as well.

However, why mention elder brother? Because his younger brother, Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri, aged just 16, has been given his first call-up to Jamaica senior team. The youngster is a Manchester City academy player noted for a bright future, and has already represented Scotland at Under-16 level. Jamaica, though, have been able to convince him to pledge his loyalties to the nation. Whether he makes his senior debut against India is set to be seen.
Joel Latibeaudiere
Latibeaudiere is a central defender who plays for Coventry City and a graduate of the Manchester City academy. After leaving City, he went on to play for Swansea, then signed for Coventry City in 2023. This season, Latibeaudiere was a rotation player under Frank Lampard as the side won promotion to the Premier League. However, he is one of the more experienced heads in the Jamaica squad for the tournament, and likely will be their most crucial defender.

Tyrese Hall
Hall is a Tottenham Hotspur loanee, who has come off a season playing regular football in League Two with Notts County on loan. Another youngster in the team, aged just 20, the attacking midfielder has already made his senior debut for Jamaica in 2025. With the lack of more experienced players in the squad, Hall’s ability on the ball and skill to unlock a defence could prove valuable for Jamaica.

What can be expected from the game:
The fixture will likely feature Jamaican dominance. They are the better side rankings-wise and on pure player power. This Jamaican side, while still is a second-string team, still features more players with notable European experience at academy and senior level, and will remain a threat.
India are likely to rely on defensive resilience and playing for the counter-attack. Time on the ball is likely to be limited, and chances would also be rare to come by. The only way the Blue Tigers could spring a shock is with pace out wide, which the likes of Ryan Williams, Lallianzuala Chhangte, and Noufal PN would be able to bring to the table. However, a win seems almost out of the question.

Information about the match:
The match is set to take place at 12:00 am IST on Thursday, 28th May, at The Valley in London. Tickets for the match are available on the Unity Cup website, and the match is set to be streamed on FanCode.
