Following a 2-0 defeat against Jamaica in their opening game of the 2026 Unity Cup in London, the Indian national football team will now take on Zimbabwe national football team in the third-place playoff match at The Valley, the venue hosting the tournament. Both teams will battle for the bronze medal as they look to end their Unity Cup campaign on a positive note.
More than the scoreline itself, the most disappointing aspect of India’s defeat against Jamaica was the manner in which the Blue Tigers lost the game. Apart from a brief spell in the second half, Khalid Jamil’s side looked second best for most of the match and at times appeared completely out of ideas. One of the biggest issues India faced was coping with the physicality of the Jamaican players — something that often becomes a challenge against African opposition.
However, several tactical decisions made by Khalid Jamil also came under scrutiny. Starting Farukh in midfield despite having Ricky and Macarton on the bench, switching to a back five and unsettling the defensive structure, moving Roshan Singh into midfield during the second half, and substituting Noufal shortly after bringing him on for his national team debut were all decisions that raised serious questions.

That said, Khalid Jamil now has an opportunity to redeem himself against Zimbabwe by making the right tactical adjustments and guiding India to a bronze-medal finish. The challenge becomes even tougher with Ryan Williams reportedly unavailable due to injury, but it is far from impossible.
Shortly after taking charge of the national team, Khalid had guided India to victories over stronger opposition such as Oman and helped the Blue Tigers secure bronze at the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup — results that could inspire the current squad ahead of this crucial fixture.
In the absence of Ryan Williams and after several underwhelming performances against Jamaica, here are a few changes Khalid Jamil should consider for the clash against Zimbabwe.
Pramveer in, Rahul Bheke out
It may finally be time for Khalid Jamil to start experimenting with younger players in defense and identify long-term options for the national team. Rahul Bheke has undoubtedly been one of India’s most reliable defenders over the years, but at 35 years of age, he is no longer the same player.

That decline was visible against Jamaica, where Bheke struggled with the opposition’s pace and intensity and often looked slow when closing down attackers. Similar signs were noticeable during the ISL season as well, which is understandable given his age.
Khalid now needs to be braver with his selections, and Pramveer could be a player capable of making a long-term impact in central defense, especially in the absence of Anwar Ali. Pramveer is comfortable in possession, capable of helping India play out from the back, and also possesses the physicality and aerial presence needed against physically dominant sides like Zimbabwe.
Nikhil Barla in, Nikhil Poojary out
No Indian football fan will forget the outstanding run Nikhil Poojary enjoyed with the national team during the 2023 summer, helping India secure multiple titles. However, much like Rahul Bheke, he has struggled to match the tempo and pace when playing against higher-ranked oppositions like Jamaica. Ideally, Abhishek Singh would have been the preferred option if available.

In his absence, Khalid Jamil should hand an opportunity to Nikhil Barla, who has consistently impressed in the ISL over the last two seasons. Barla possesses good pace, solid defensive qualities, and excellent delivery in the final third, making him well suited to the role of a modern attacking full-back.
Since Nikhil Poojary has already been given an opportunity without making a major impact, this could be the right moment to test Barla at the international level. Having already worked under Khalid Jamil at Jamshedpur FC, Barla should already be familiar with the coach’s tactical demands.
Ricky Shabong in, Farukh Choudhary out
In the brief eight-minute cameo he made against Jamaica, Ricky Shabong displayed exactly what India were lacking in midfield — qualities that Farukh was unable to provide despite playing most of the game. To be fair, that was less a failure of Farukh and more a consequence of Khalid Jamil deploying a forward in an unfamiliar holding midfield role.

Although Ricky may not be the tallest or most physically dominant midfielder, he is an extremely aggressive and hardworking presence in the center of the park. He competes fiercely in every duel and excels at recovering possession.
Ricky also presses aggressively while being press-resistant himself, which would allow India to retain possession more effectively and build structured attacking patterns from midfield.
Mohammed Sanan in, Roshan Singh out
Although replacing Roshan Singh with Mohammed Sanan is not a direct positional swap given Roshan operated as a wing-back/midfielder in the previous game, Khalid Jamil must consider reverting to a back four and deploying Sanan in a more natural wide attacking role. This would also allow Edmund to operate more centrally as a secondary striker, a role in which he could be far more dangerous due to his finishing ability.

Sanan already has experience working under Khalid Jamil, who played a key role in giving the youngster his breakthrough ISL campaign. His pace, direct running, and dribbling ability could become a vital component of India’s attack, particularly in transition situations.
Given the way Noufal was treated during his debut against Jamaica, Sanan appears more likely to start, although Vikram Pratap Singh could also emerge as an option.
Rahim Ali in, Ryan Williams out
Another tactical mistake Khalid Jamil appeared to make against Jamaica was deploying Ryan Williams as a lone striker against physically imposing defenders. Ryan is most effective when operating in space and is naturally better suited to a false-nine or second-striker role rather than playing as an isolated centre-forward.

India looked far more threatening in attack after Rahim Ali entered the game during the second half, with Ryan dropping deeper behind him. Although the partnership lasted only briefly, Rahim made a strong impression with his pressing intensity and physical presence.
His aggressive pressing and movement unsettled the Jamaican defense and helped India create a few attacking opportunities. Khalid Jamil should look to follow a similar blueprint against Zimbabwe by starting Rahim as the focal point of the attack and allowing the supporting attackers to play around him.
