Bienvenido a los Blasters, Juan – Kerala Blasters complete Foreign Quota with Juan Rodríguez

Kerala Blasters' new Spanish defender Juan Rodríguez

The Blasters have reached an agreement with Spanish center-back Juan Rodríguez Martínez ahead of the 2025-26 season, subject to medicals, the club announced on Thursday. The announcement came as a surprise to many fans, because of how ‘early’ the announcement came, as it had not even been 24 hours since the announcement of Tiago when the club broke the news. Let’s now take a look at the Blasters’ new signing:

Center-Back, one of the most crucial positions in an 11, is a position where Kerala Blasters have been… let’s say struggling a bit to find the right player. Since the departure of Marko Lešković, the club didn’t have a consistent experienced center-back, something which deepened the club’s defensive woes last season and now, with the signing of Juan, the Club has an experienced defender in their ranks and would be hoping that he could finally end their defensive woes.

Now, about the man himself, Juan is a 30-year-old Spanish Center-Back with extensive experience in Spanish football. He has appeared in 245 games, mostly in the Spanish Third-Tier of Football, followed by sporadic spells in LaLiga2 and LaLiga. The Cedeira-born is known for his Aerial Prowess, Positional Awareness, Composure on the ball, and most importantly, his reliability and leadership at the back. The Spaniard started in all 36 league games that he was a part of during last season, showcasing how important and reliable he was for his previous club.

A Chaotic Past

He started his youth career at his hometown club Cedeira SD before joining the youth setup of Racing Club de Ferrol, where he would eventually make his senior debut on 12 December 2001 as a substitute. Juan would eventually leave the club in 2014, due to a lack of chances and would sign for fourth-tier side Arosa SC, where he would end up being an undisputed starter for the club. He joined UD Somozas in the Spanish third-tier the very next season, and his performances then ended up catching the attention of the then LaLiga side Sporting de Gijon, who signed him on a 2-year deal in 2016, as a reserve player.

He would, however, make his first-team and LaLiga debut soon on 22 October 2016, starting in a 0-0 away draw against Granada CF. He would go on to make 3 more LaLiga appearances that season, famously starting for the club in their away game against FC Barcelona, which they went on to lose 6-1 (Yes, this was the same MSN era Barcelona team that pulled off the iconic ‘La Remontada’ game against Paris Saint-Germain). He would spend the next season playing for both the relegated senior team and the B team of Sporting de Gijón in Segunda División (now, LaLiga2) and Segunda División B (now, Primera Federación), and would start in one promotion qualification game each for both sides, but unfortunately, both sides failed to achieve their goal.

In spite of that, ahead of the 2018–19 season, he was definitely promoted to the main squad after agreeing to a new two-year contract. However, he would only get 8 appearances for the club in the 2018/19 season and would move to third-tier side Gimnàstic de Tarragona on a 2-year deal the very next season, after terminating his link with Sporting. He went on to make 28 appearances for the club that season in the Spanish third division, but he would leave the club the very next season by mutual agreement and agreed to a three-year deal with fellow league team San Fernando CD (dissolved on 7 August 2025 – R.I.P.) just hours later.

Recent Years

After 2 decent years in San Fernando, Rodríguez joined SD Amorebieta in Primera Federación for the 22/23 season. He featured in 25 matches during the campaign, as the club earned promotion to Segunda División (now, LaLiga2) at first attempt. Juan would sign for another third-tier side, Algeciras CF, in the 23/24 season, and would go on to start in 34 of the 35 matches he was a part of and finish the season with 4 Goal Contributions (2 Goals, 2 Assists). He would sign for another third-tier club, CD Lugo, the very next season and went on to start every league match he was a part of that season, ending the season with 36 Appearances and 3 Goals to his name.

He left the club as a free agent following the expiry of his contract. Fast forward to the present, and now he’s the new man at the backline for the Blasters. Now let’s look at what he could potentially bring to the table, shall we:

What does Juan bring to the Blasters:

Pros:

  • Experience: Juan’s abundant experience in Spain might be nothing new for the reader right now, so I am skipping it for now.
  • Ball-Playing Ability: Juan, like many other modern CBs, is a Ball-Playing CB. His Ball-Playing abilities will help the club progress the ball with more ease, a trait much required for a CB in the system of Head Coach David Catala.
  • Aerial Threat: One of the Blaster’s attacking weak points last season was conversion/threat from set-pieces, and with the addition of Juan, the club might’ve just found a new target man in the box during corners.
  • Positional Awareness: Juan is a Center-Back who relies on space recognition more than pace to defend. His positional awareness trait helps him cut off attacks before they become a threat. For an example from ISL, yesteryear Blaster Alexandre Coeff is a similar player compared to Juan in that regard.
  • Composure: Kerala Blasters are a club notoriously known for folding in the dying minutes of the game under opposition pressure, and Juan’s composed nature, especially on the ball, would help the team manage the pressure massively, which could lead to defensive stability in the dying minutes of the game.
  • Leadership: One of the major complaints that both fans and pundits had about the Blasters in the previous season was the absence of a Leader at the back, post the departure of Marko Lešković. The lack of Leadership had caused the Blasters’ defense to crumble and make silly mistakes last season, but with the arrival of Juan, the Blasters can hopefully fill their Leadership void at the back and be stable once again.
  • Defensive Solidarity: Defensive Solidarity is a key point in the David Catala regime. Juan, possessing the aforementioned qualities, could help the Blasters’ defense to be solid and consistent once again, allowing Catala and the boys to go through with their attacking plans.

Cons:

  • Pace: Not a very fast CB, could get outpaced by speedy forwards.
  • Adaptation: Kerala Blasters is Juan’s first club outside Spain, so adapting to Indian conditions could prove to be a challenge.
  • Ground Duels: Stats indicate a moderate success rate in Ground Duels.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, Juan is a decent signing. He is someone who is a solution to some of the club’s biggest issues from last season, and also someone who fits in the current system implemented at the club. Whether he becomes a success or not, however, is a tale for time to tell
