ISL 2025/26 Preview: FC Goa vs Mumbai City FC

FC Goa vs Mumbai City FC ISL 2025-26 Preview

As this shortened version of the Indian Super League approaches its end, Mumbai City and FC Goa are set for the only league iteration of the West Coast Derby of the season. For Mumbai, this game represents a chance to go four points clear at the top of the table. For Goa, a win would take them up to third.

This is the second meeting between the two sides of the season, with the previous encounter in the Super Cup semi-final ending 2-1 to the Gaurs. This time though, Mumbai comes in with the significantly better momentum and position on the table. However, one can never count FC Goa out.

FC Goa

The Gaurs have not been at their best this season and have notably struggled for momentum. Despite starting the season earlier than the other teams due to Asian Champions League 2 commitments, the squad has not been able to translate their greater match experience into strong ISL performances. Part of that could be down to the foreigner exodus, with Iker Guarrotxena, Javi Siverio, Borja Herrera, and David Timor departing after the campaign.

However, in the eight games they have played so far, four have ended in draws. In their past 5 games, Manolo Marquez’s side have only managed 1 win, that too against a depleted Odisha, 3 draws, and a loss. To their credit, it was their first loss of the season. The issue though, has been in attack.

Compared to last season’s average of 5 shots on target per game and 1.7 goals per game, this season, Goa have averaged 3.9 shots on target per game, and 1.1 goals per game. Looking to improve this against a Mumbai side whose main strength this season has been their defense will be a challenge.

Mumbai City

Following the 1-1 draw in the previous game against Jamshedpur, Mumbai need a positive result to get their title fight back on track. While the Jamshedpur result was a disappointing fixture, other results have meant that, as things stand, the club still has a one-point lead above Mohun Bagan. However, the club would need to build on it and continue their strong defense-first approach that has been the Islanders’ signature this season.

In the club’s last 5 games, they have secured three wins and two draws. In the eight games this season, the side remains the only team still unbeaten in the league. However, the key problems of creativity have remained prevalent, as Petr Kratky’s side has also had its fair share of goalscoring issues.

Despite these, Mumbai is also the only side to have scored in every game they have played so far. The Goa game will put this streak to the test though.

Team news

FC Goa come into the fixture with a fully fit squad barring Ishan Pandita, whose availability is still uncertain. Mumbai City on the other hand, have fitness concerns in terms of their foreign attackers, Jorge Ortiz and Jorge Pereyra Diaz.

However, in his pre-match press conference, Petr Kratky hinted Diaz would be back for the game, but Ortiz remains in rehabilitation.

Head-to-head

Mumbai City has a notably good record against FC Goa, with 13 out of the past 29 meeting between the sides ending in favor of the Islanders. Furthermore, until the previous league game between the two sides, Mumbai City had a 13-match unbeaten run against the Gaurs, stretching back to the 2020-21 season.

The most famous result of the run was arguably Mumbai City’s 3-2 comeback against Goa in the 2023-24 season’s semi-final first leg. The match that broke the streak though, was a 3-1 win for Goa at the Mumbai Football Arena last season.

Predicted lineups:

FC Goa:

Hrithik Tiwari (GK), Boris Singh, Sandesh Jhingan, Pol Moreno, Aakash Sangwan, Harsh Patre, Sahil Tavora, Udanta Singh, Dejan Drazic, Brison Fernandes, Mohammad Yasir

Mumbai City FC:

Phurba Lachenpa (GK), Valpuia, Nuno Reis, Bijay Chhetri, Akash Mishra, Joni Kauko, Lalnuntluanga Bawitlung (Tluanga), Lallianzuala Chhangte, Brandon Fernandes, PN Noufal, Jorge Pereyra Diaz.

Key battles:

Dejan Drazic vs Valpuia

This will be a battle between arguably both sides’ most consistent players. Drazic this season has regularly started in the attacking midfield position for Goa but regularly drifted toward the left side of the pitch. Valpuia on the other hand, starts at right-back, but likes to invert and take up more central positions.

The two will likely come up against each other on numerous occasions due to their positional similarity. Whether Valpuia can deal with Drazic, alongside Brison and Sangwan, will be seen.

Boris Singh vs PN Noufal

This duel is a “pace vs pace” face-off. PN Noufal, since he’s come into the Mumbai side, has used his fearsome pace to initiate counter-attacks, and blitz past opposition wide players.

Boris Singh, though, is a player who can match, and has matched, some of the quicker wingers in the league for pace. He is likely going to be tasked with keeping track of Noufal, but also use his skill on the ball to venture forward to help his side out in attack as well.

Joni Kauko vs Ayush Chhetri

Joni Kauko has been a midfield controller for the Islanders since his arrival at the club, and has been a notable factor behind their defensive record as well. His calmness ahead of the defence, paired with Tluanga, have also led to midfield control regularly being kept by the Islanders.

Goa, on the other hand, have the option of a number of midfielders, such as Sahil Tavora, Ayush Chhetri, and Harsh Patre. The midfield pair chosen will have the hard task of one-upping the Kauko-Tluanga pair ahead of them.

When and where to watch the match?

The match will be played on 18 April, and will be played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Goa. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM IST. The game will be broadcast live on the Sony Sports Network, and live-streamed on the FanCode digital platform.
